Russell Crowe to direct and star in a poker movie

Action movie ‘Poker Face’ is set in Sydney and will also star Natalie Portman, but it will probably be light on the actual poker.

While poker fans wait for Rounders 2 (never happening guys) we have another poker movie in the works.

Russell Crowe is starring in and directing the upcoming action thriller Poker Face. Crowe will star as a tech billionaire who gathers his childhood friends for a high stakes poker game. However, his mansion gets invaded by a murderer.

The movie was originally set in Miami but Crowe insisted it be set in Sydney, with a car chase scene planned to take place at Sydney Harbour. This is ironic, given that online poker is currently banned in Australia (but having said that, it also is in Miami). It will feature James Packer’s (son of legendary gambler Kerry Packer) $140 million penthouse in the city.

The movie will also star Natalie Portman and Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA

Poker fans have been desperate for a new poker movie that captures the essence of poker the way Rounders did. The nearest we have had to date is Molly’s Game and given that his is an action movie, it looks like poker will only serve as a plot device to put the characters in the same place together.
